The Bangladesh Bank: 

Bangladesh Bank (BB) regulates and supervises the activities of all banks. It has been working as the central bank of Bangladesh since its independence. Its prime jobs include issuing of currency. Maintaining foreign exchange reserve and providing transactions facilities of all public monetary matters.

Bangladesh Bank has a governing body comprising of nine members with the governor as its chief. Apart from the hrad office in Dhaka of which two in Dhaka, it has nine more branches in Chittagong, Rajshahi, Barishal, Khulna, Rangur, Bogra and Sylhet. The Bangladesh Bank is now carrying out a reform program to ensure quality serves by the banks. The Bangladesh Bank has a great significance over the economic condition of Bangladesh.

The Role of Banks in Economic Development of Bangladesh:

Banks have played major roles in the economic development of the country. Most of the credit related schemes of the government to uplift the poorer and the under privileged sections have been implemented through the banking sector. The role of he banks have been important, but it is going to be even more important in the future.

Banks in Bangladesh:
The commercial banking system dominates Bangladesh's financial sector. Bangladesh Bank is the Central Bank of Bangladesh and the chief regularity authority in the sector. The banking system is composed of four state owned commercial banks, five specialized development banks, thirty private commercial banks and nine commercial foreign banks. The noble prize winning Grameen Bank is a specialized micro-finance institution, which revolutionized the concept of micro credit and contributed greatly towards poverty reduction and the empowerment of women in Bangladesh. Sonali Bank is the largest among the nationalized banks, while Pubali Bank is the leading in the private ones. Among the foreign banks Standard Chartered has become the largest one across the country.

History of Bangladesh

Bangladesh has a vast history.The country (named East Pakistan that time) was ruled by Pakistan (West Pakistan) till 1971 from 1947 and became independent at 16th December 1971 after 9 months liberation war.No other country gave their blood for the safety of their mother tongue (Bengali) like Bangladesh.That is why the achievement is so great for Bangladeshi people.

At November 1999 UNESCO ( United Nations Education,Scientific & Cultural Organizations) announced 21st February as International Mother Language Day.21st Feb,1952 was a memorable day for Bangladesh.

The Language Movement of 1952 to recognize Bangladesh as a state language may be termed as the first step towards independence.

The history of is very long.After the British People escaped from the subcontinent the greater India was divided by 2 nations.One is India and the another is Pakistan (East Pakistan and West Pakistan joint).The west Pakistan started to discriminate East Pakistan in all possible ways.All were tolerated as the people of East Pakistan were very much calm and quite.But when the West Pakistani people announced that Urdu will be the Mother Language for both Pakistan, eventually people protested against it.Students were the first to strike at 1952.

May 7, 1954

The Pakistan government recognizes Bangla as a state language.

Feb 26, 1956

The Constituent Assembly passes the first Constitution of Pakistan recognizing Bangla as a State Language.

March 23, 1956

The first Constitution of Pakistan comes into effect.

March 26, 1971

Bangladesh become an independent nation.
